PACCE 3-Day Event
The Lions Club of Grand Cayman annually hosts a robust campaign to educate the country on the effects and possible prevention of diseases that primarily affect men’s health, starting with prostate, colon and testicular cancers. The prevalence of the related issues locally and regionally have prompted us to focus on creating an acute awareness among our male population and hopefully remove some of the dangerous myths that prevent many individuals from even getting checked in the first place. We lost one of our Past Presidents in January of 2011 to Colon Cancer and we decided to stop talking and do something about helping others.
Clearly, the members of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman are not experts in men’s health and in particular these diseases, so we have partnered with other local organizations who can bring the benefit of our efforts directly to the people who need it. Our task will be to raise the needed funds to fight the battle against these diseases and in so doing support the efforts of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and Hospice Care who are doing a sterling job in helping those in need of support due to these diseases. The funds raised by the Lions Club of Grand Cayman will go towards our awareness program and the assistance to individuals affected by these types of cancer. 50% of the proceeds will go the CI Cancer Society, 25% to Hospice care and the remaining 25% will remain with us for the awareness program and public assistance.
In order to raise funds for this initiative, the Lions Club of Grand Cayman now organises the annual Delano Hislop Memorial 3 Day journey for life, which takes place over three days over to long weekend at the beginning of July, commencing on the Saturday and ending on the Monday.
This year, the 3rd annual Delano Hislop Memorial 3 Day Journey For Life takes place over the three days commencing on Saturday July 5 and ending on public holiday Monday July 7th. We attracted a modest number of participants in our first 2 events, but raised approximately CI$40,000.00 and CI$44,000.00 respectively . We are actively working on improving participation each year.
In the first two years we asked participants to walk approximately 15 miles each day with a minimum registration fee of CI$500.00 each. This year we are asking for a registration fee of only CI$50.00 but will continue to encourage participants to raise extra funds for the cause by way of our sponsor sheets, and to set themselves a minimum target of CI$500.00 each. Again all funds will go towards our awareness program and assistance to individuals affected by these cancers. 50% of the proceeds will go the CI Cancer Society, 25% to HospiceCare and the remaining 25% will remain with us for the awareness program and public assistance. Last year we proudly handed over checks to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and Hospice Care for CI$22,000.00 and CI$11,000.00 respectively.
